The Schreiner University men’s wrestling team traveled to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on December 14, 2024, to compete in the 918 Open. Facing off against 14 college programs, ranging from JuCo to D1, the team displayed impressive performances and achieved significant individual success.

In the 149-pound weight class, Julian Banda earned a well-deserved second place after a strong showing throughout the tournament.

The 285-pound weight class saw another dominant performance from Austin Cooley, who claimed first place with a major decision victory (11-1) over Marce Vasquez from York (Neb.). Cooley’s victory not only secured the top spot but also helped lead Schreiner to the highest team point total of the tournament, with Cooley contributing an impressive 21 points—the most scored by any wrestler that day.

Coach expressed confidence in the team’s progress: “We are continuing to make strides in the competition, facing off against seasoned teams. Our returners have made huge improvements weekend to weekend, setting their sights on conference and the national tournament.”

The Mountaineers left the 918 Open with valuable experience and a sense of accomplishment. With this kind of growth and determination, the Mountaineers are primed for continued success as they prepare for the conference championships and beyond.
