If you’ve heard Nate Smith‘s songs like “Fix What You Didn’t Break,” you can probably hear some country, pop and rock influences. That’s because the California native grew up listening to more than just country and loving genres outside of country.

“I love 2000s pop-rock music. I love alternative like Goo Goo Dolls [and] Lifehouse. I’ve always loved that kind of stuff, too, so it’s definitely in my influence,” Nate tells ABC Audio. “But [‘Fix What You Didn’t Break’] has that kind of vibe. I mean, it has a little ‘Here Without You.’ It has a little ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.’ It has that, like, anthemic kind of vibe to it.”

Beyond the sound, Nate firmly believes in the message of unconditional love in “Fix What You Didn’t Break” and believes it’s one Americans need to hear right now.

“It’s kind of like looking at it [and] going, ‘Hey, like, we all have stuff in our lives that we bring into a relationship,’ you know? But if somebody can just give you the ability to breathe through it and [go], ‘Look, I know you’re struggling with whatever you’re struggling with, man, and I love you no matter what and I’m here when you’re ready to talk.’ … that’s fixing what you didn’t break,” explains Nate.

“It’s like connecting with somebody in that way where you’re like, ‘I unconditionally love you no matter what you do, and I’m going to love you through it and I’m here for you,'” he says. “That’s what the song’s about, and I think America needs to hear that.”

“Fix What You Didn’t Break” is Nate’s current single and it’s now in the top 35 of the country charts.
