Icy roads, freezing temps, and another round of winter weather on the way

Road conditions in the Texas Hill Country Saturday morning were much worse than Friday morning, as the ground was frozen and the ice began sticking to the roadways.

Multiple cars were in the ditch Saturday morning between Kerrville and Fredericksburg on State Highway 16 due to icy road conditions, including an 18 wheeler, who slid off of the roadway into a group of vehicles.

Many other reports of motorists stranded along Hill Country roadways are being reported this morning as Hill Country residents venture out, but residents are urged to stay home if at all possible.

The Kerrville Police Department made a Facebook post urging everyone to stay home and not drive unless it is absolutely necessary. They are also asking residents not to call their dispatch phone number to ask about road conditions.

“Please do not call our dispatchers asking about road conditions! They are busy taking calls for service and communicating with our first responders! Roads are slick and icy and are going to stay that way throughout the weekend,” said a Facebook post from the Kerrville Police Department Saturday morning.

“Check drivetexas.org for the latest highway information, but understand they are probably not going to know the conditions on your street. There are closures due to ice on IH10, both directions. TxDOT has worked through the night to get it open between Kerrville and Boerne. We are unable to give updates on road conditions outside our jurisdiction. Again, avoid travel if you can.”

The Center Point Volunteer Fire Department also posted the following in the Kerrville Breaking News group Saturday morning.

Don’t look for road conditions to improve over the next few days, as another winter storm system is predicted to move through the Hill Country Sunday night into Monday, and light amounts of precipitation keep falling and icing up the roads leading up to the next system.

The ground is now frozen, which means that any precipitation that falls will become ice.

The best way to avoid getting in an accident over the next few days is to leave your vehicle parked and wait it out.

Single digit temperatures are expected over the next few days and we might not see temperatures above freezing until at least Wednesday.
