Back in 2017, Lindsey Stirling released her Christmas album Warmer in the Winter, and one of the songs on it was “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” featuring Sabrina Carpenter. This year she’s released a deluxe version of her 2022 Christmas album, Snow Waltz, with four extra tracks, one of which is that same version of “Grinch” with Sabrina.
“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” was originally recorded by Thurl Ravenscroft — yes, that was his name — for the 1966 TV special How the Grinch Stole Christmas. After that, it was recorded by many artists, most of whom were men.
“Which is why I was so determined [to have a woman sing it],” Lindsey told ABC Audio in 2017. “You know, we were having a debate a little bit with some of my team, and I was like, ‘Nope, I’m standing firm. A woman will sing this song.’ I wanted that so bad. And that was one of the songs I definitely wanted on the album.”
At the time, Sabrina, who was about 18 years old, had been releasing Christmas songs on and off since 2012. “I had met Sabrina backstage at the Disney Awards and we’d been like, you know, ‘We should do something together someday.’ And so I hit her up,” Lindsey recalled.
“And it was actually quite cute because she told me, ‘I really wanted to do “The Grinch,” and I just have never gotten around to it,'” Lindsay said. “So she was very excited about it and I think she just put a perfect spin on it.”
Sabrina went on to release more Christmas music, including her 2022 track “A Nonsense Christmas,” her 2023 EP Fruitcake and her current Netflix holiday special, also called A Nonsense Christmas. Meanwhile, Lindsey’s out on her annual Christmas tour.
