Kerr County VSO asking residents to consider becoming a VA Medical Foster Home

Kerr County residents are being asked to consider becoming a VA Medical Foster Home, offered through the VHA.  The Medical Foster Home (MFA) program offers veterans who need daily care a unique alternative to nursing homes.  Approved veterans live in caregivers’ homes, receive personalized attention and one-on-one care, and are supported by VA’s primary care teams who provide medical care directly in the home.

“Right now, there are no options like this available to veterans in need in our county, or in surrounding counties,” said Kerr County Veterans Service Officer Jenna Sanchez.  “We are hoping by making people aware of this avenue of care, that some caring individuals might be willing to step up and truly show their support to our aging veteran population.”

Veterans who qualify for the MFH program may pay their caregivers directly.  For those concerned about affordability, many veterans may be eligible for financial assistance through VA Pension or VA Aid and Attendance benefits.

“Caregivers in this program provide support to veterans, such as medication management, personal care, meal preparation and help with social activities – all of which allow our nation’s aging veterans the ability to maintain their dignity and quality of life in a home-style setting,” Sanchez added.

The Kerr County Veterans Service Office is located in Suite 107 of the county’s 550 Earl Garrett Street building.  Business hours are Mondays through Thursdays.  While walk-ins are accepted, priority is given to those with appointments.  To make an appointment, call 830-792-2203.
