Confirmed cases of New World screwworm rose overnight in Texas, marking one of the biggest jumps so far as state and federal officials ramp up efforts to contain the parasite. The number of confirmed cases increased from 20 to 25. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the newest cases are in Crockett, Edwards and Medina counties. There are currently 22 active cases.
New World Screwworm is the larva of a parasitic fly that feeds on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals.
Texas and the federal government are increasing their response, including funding to hire more livestock inspectors and strengthen surveillance. AgriLife Extension is also holding community meetings to help people learn about the parasite and how to protect their livestock.
The Texas Board Coalition posted on X that it gathered a group of judges from across the Texas-Mexico border region to discuss the Screwworm crisis with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
