As wildfire threats continue, the Texas Division of Emergency Management and Texas A&M Forest Service urge the public to prepare Wildfire Readiness Kits. TDEM reminds us that it takes just a spark to ignite a fire and prompt local evaluations.
It is recommended that kits are filled with the following items:
~Food and Water and Pet Supplies
~First Aid, Medication, Hygiene Supplies
~Communication, Lighting, Document Bag Items
Pack your supplies in a portable container. A waterproof container is best. You may also want to create a smaller go-kit of basic supplies in a backpack. If you must leave on foot, you can carry it with you.
It is recommended you add these items for evacuating by car:
~Road maps
~Car repair items
~Food and water
~Plastic plates, cups, utensils
~Tent, blankets, pillows
~Clothes and sturdy shoes
~Rain gear and towels
~Books, games, toys
Before you leave home, remember:
~Fill your gas tank
~Take cash, checkbook, and credit cards
~Call your family emergency contact
~Charge your mobile phone
~Get a map of your route
Those who are sheltering in place should remember:
~Smoke detectors with extra batteries
~Carbon monoxide detector
~Fire extinguisher
~Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to seal doors, windows, and air vents from contaminated air or to build an emergency shelter)
TDEM urges people to think of their day to day needs for independence. Plan now for your health away from home, and label medical equipment with your contact information.
