Golf tournament raising money for Comfort volunteer firefighters

The Comfort Volunteer Fire Department is holding its first annual Golf Classic on Friday, Oct. 9, at Buckhorn Golf Course in Comfort.  Money raised will help pay for equipment, training, protective gear and emergency response resources.

The need is significant.  Department representatives say turnout gear alone costs $6,000, meaning some volunteers must wait until funding is available to receive proper gear.  The department is only partially funded by government sources, while its expenses extend well beyond that funding.

Organizers say the response to the fundraiser has already exceeded expectations.  The tournament initially capped registration at 20 teams and 80 golfers, but after those spots filled, Buckhorn Golf Course allowed the event to expand to as many as 144 players.

The four-person scramble begins with check-in at 7 a.m. and a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.  The entry fee is $500 per team and includes green fees, a cart and range balls.  Breakfast and lunch will also be provided.  Golfers can compete in long drive, putting and closest-to-the-pin contests, with awards presented at the end of the tournament.

The message behind the fundraiser is simple:  These volunteers show up when their neighbors need them, including during one of the darkest days the Hill Country has faced.  Now organizers hope their neighbors will show up for them.  When catastrophic flooding swept through the Hill Country on July 4, 2025, volunteer firefighters in Comfort were among those who answered the call.
