Boerne PD issue warning about scammers posing as banks

The Boerne Police Department is warning residents to be on the lookout for phishing emails posing as banks.  According to BPD, these fake messages look like they’re from your bank and are designed to create a sense of urgency, hoping you’ll click a link, open an attachment or share sensitive information.

Some warning signs that are often used to lure you into the scam include:

~A message asking you to click a link to log in or verify your account

~An email claiming your account has been frozen or that there’s suspicious activity that needs immediate attention

~Requests for your password, PIN, full account number or one-time security verification codes

~Unexpected attachments that could install harmful software on your device

~An email address that looks similar to your bank’s but includes misspellings, extra numbers or an unusual web address

BPD recommends the following to help protect yourself:

~Don’t click links or open attachments in unexpected emails claiming to be from your bank

~Type your bank’s website directly into your browser or use the bank’s official mobile app

~If you are unsure an email is legitimate, call your bank using the phone number on the back of your debit or credit card

~Always remember that legitimate banks will never ask for your password, PIN or one-time verification code through email
