Camp Mystic filed a plan to auction camp amid bankruptcy

Camp Mystic has asked a Houston bankruptcy court to put its Kerr County camp up for a court-supervised auction as flood-related lawsuits continue.  A Chapter 11 reorganization plan filed Friday proposes selling about 749 acres on the south fork of the Guadalupe River, along with substantially all other assets, according to court documents.

Nothing in the plan requires a buyer to keep running a camp.  The debtors said they prefer a purchaser who would “maintain the historic mission” of Camp Mystic.  A new operator would need a youth camp license from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The private Christian camp was hit by catastrophic flooding on July 4, 2025.  Twenty-five campers, two counselors and the camp’s owner, Richard Eastland, died there.  Several families of the victims have filed wrongful-death lawsuits.  The bankruptcy filing paused that state-court litigation.  The new plan would send those claims back toward trial and would not release family members from the suits.

The proposal still needs approval from U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher M. Lopez.  Camp Mystic LLC and affiliated Eastland family companies filed for Chapter 11 in the Southern District of Texas on June 24.
