Fire officials are investigating after a child drowned at the Boerne City Lake on Sunday.  City officials say that dispatch received an initial 911 call just before 6:30 p.m. regarding a child who was in the water and did not resurface.

According to witnesses, two children were in the water, and both began to struggle.  A bystander was able to retrieve one child, but when they went back for the second child, they could not locate them in the water, according to a press release.  The Boerne Fire Department Water Rescue Team, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Boerne Police Department, Sister Dale VFD, Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, and Kendall County EMS responded.

The victim has not been identified.  An 80-year-old San Antonio man drowned in the same body of water in May.

The Texas Game Wardens on Saturday evening said its agency had responded to at least six “water-related fatalities and emergencies across the state” by that point in the weekend.  The agency shared the following warnings to prevent tragedy as families hit the water over the summer months:

~Wear an approved life jacket.

~Don’t boat while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

~Keep a close eye on children.

~Wear the emergency engine cut-off switch for your boat or vessel on your person.

~Be prepared to adapt to changing weather conditions.

~Avoid unnecessary risks.
