During a Monday morning press conference, Kerr County officials have confirmed that there are at least 75 deaths, including 27 children. Additionally, 10 girls and one camp counselor are still missing from Camp Mystic, according to Senator Ted Cruz. “The pain and agony of not knowing your child’s whereabouts, it’s the worst thing imaginable.”
Camp Mystic released in a statement Monday morning that it was “grieving the loss” of 27 campers and counselors as the search continues for victims of the disaster. The flooding sent a wall of water through the century-old summer camp Friday. The Guadalupe River rose more than 26ft in less than an hour causing widespread damage.
Cruz also confirmed the statewide death toll following flash flooding in Central Texas has risen to at least 82. “Texas is grieving right now. The pain, the shock of what has transpired these last few days has broken the heart of our state.”
Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice said search and rescue operations are continuing, but they are facing a lot of challenges with terrain and water, and warning expected bad weather could further complicate their efforts.
Rice says that some 40 power lines are still down, with infrastructure in the area also damaged. Additional personnel have been brought in for repairs, but they do not have an estimated time on when power will be restored.
Another press conference is expected Monday afternoon.
