Kerr County warns residents and businesses to be wary of scammers following week’s storms

Kerr County officials want to remind residents who suffered damages from this week’s hail storm to be very wary when it comes time to select a business to help with repairs.  “Every time we have some type of severe weather event that causes damages to homes, vehicles and other property, a lot of people pretending to be contractors come out of the woodwork to scam residents out of their money,” said Kerr County Emergency Management  Coordinator Dub Thomas.

In an effort to help citizens guard themselves against becoming a target for a fraudulent contractor, Thomas offered some information from the Texas Department of Insurance.  “Please take a minute to review these reminders of what to watch for when it comes time for storm recovery,” Thomas said.

Additionally, when hiring a company, attempt to use local companies, get more than one bid, and don’t pay up front.

The Texas Department of Insurance can help explain the claims process and even help resolve insurance complaints.  TDI is also able to assist with investigating suspected insurance fraud and help with contacting your insurance company.

For more information, call (800) 252-3439, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, or visit www.tdi.texas.gov.
