Kerrville Main Street brick return underway

The City of Kerrville, along with the Main Street Advisory Board, wants to inform citizens about ongoing plans to retrieve all memorial bricks located on the sidewalks throughout downtown due to safety and aesthetic reasons. The bricks will be replaced with unmarked pavers and will be stored at a city-owned facility. Bricks will be distributed once the level of interest is gathered over the next 45 days.

In 2019, the City of Kerrville Main Street Program created a Main Street Advisory Board (MSAB), comprised of property and/or business owners within the Main Street boundaries, with all members being residents of Kerr County. All MSAB meetings are open to the public, and the first meeting of the newly-appointed members of the MSAB took place on November 20, 2019.

The board’s most immediate concern was addressing the deteriorating condition of the memorial bricks lining the downtown streets which could pose a potential threat to citizen and pedestrian safety. The damaged bricks are located within the Public Right of Way along the sidewalks downtown.

The memorial brick program was initially designed as a fundraising project to support the Main Street Program budget more than 25 years ago as part of a beautification project. In January 2021, an ad-hoc sub-committee of the Main Street Advisory Board was formed to provide a recommendation on how to proceed with the memorial brick program and decided that the most feasible long-term decision would be to return the bricks to their original owners and create a webpage to honor those who originally purchased the bricks.

A webpage has been generated to capture survey information for those interested in having their brick(s) returned, (bricks.kerrvillemainstreet.org). On August 23, 2021, the information will be compiled and the Main Street Advisory Board will arrange for a group of volunteers to gather these bricks and determine a method of disposal shortly thereafter.
