The Kerrville Police Department has identified the suspect who was killed in a fatal wreck that occurred on Tuesday, October 17, following a carjacking.

The suspect has been identified as Robbie Mario Ybarro, 46, from Bonham, Texas.  Ybarro had an extensive criminal history dating back to 1995 and was released on parole from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in December 2022.  A KPD investigation has revealed that Ybarra attempted two carjackings before stealing a vehicle at gunpoint from Sonic, located at 1281 Junction Highway.  According to a press release, the suspect first entered a vehicle in the Walmart parking lot but was startled by a passenger inside the car and ran off.  Ybarra then attempted to carjack a vehicle in the Wendy’s parking lot and displayed a handgun to the individual inside of the car.  The suspect eventually fled after being told by the passenger that they did not have the keys to the car.  Finally, Ybarra forced a driver at the Sonic parking lot to get out of their vehicle and threatened the individual at gunpoint.  After gaining access to the driver’s seat, Ybarra fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

Following the first of two 911 calls, KPD officers spotted the stolen vehicle driving north on Sidney Baker, State Highway 16 and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  Eventually, the stolen car, described as a white 2022 Honda sedan, collided with a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck in the 1800 block of Sidney Baker North.

KPD and Kerrville Fire EMS assisted the driver of the truck, a 64-year-old Kerrville resident, who was transported to Peterson Regional Medical Center.  The man was then taken via air ambulance to San Antonio Military Medical Center.  Ybarrao was pronounced dead at the scene by a Justice of the Peace.

KPD confirms that a handgun was recovered from inside the stolen vehicle but says the gun had not been reported stolen.  KPD detectives are currently investigating how Ybarra came into possession of the gun.

The investigation is ongoing, according to KPD.
