This past Sunday, the Mountaineers faced one of their toughest challenges yet at the NCC Open, held at North Central College in Naperville, IL. With fierce competition from NCAA, NAIA, JUCO, and unattached wrestlers, the team showed resilience and determination throughout the tournament.

Two standout wrestlers emerged victorious, securing first-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Odelia Lopez dominated the 103-pound weight class, while Jania Dunigan claimed the top spot in the 131-pound B bracket. Their impressive performances were key highlights in an overall strong showing for the team, who finished tied for 15th out of 45 competing programs.

Odelia Lopez, in particular, made a major statement this weekend. Not only did she clinch the top spot in her weight class, but she also defeated the No. 4 ranked wrestler in the country on her way to a fifth-place finish in one of the most competitive brackets.

Reflecting on the event, Coach shared her thoughts on the weekend’s performance: “We came for the challenge, and we noted where we can grow. Taking heavy hits every now and then creates a momentum of energy. The ladies are frustrated, and they’re ready to get back in the lab—that’s passion we can mold! We’re going in the right direction, and we’re only getting started!”

The mountaineers are eager to continue their journey and take their performance to the next level. Watch for more success as they continue to grow and develop throughout the season!
