The 13-year-old boy whose body was recovered Monday morning from Boerne Lake has been identified by family members. Boerne Fire Chief Manny Casarez said the boy, identified as Jaylen Robinson, was found around 9 a.m. about 20 feet from the shoreline in approximately 15 feet of water.
The incident began just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday when dispatchers received a 911 call reporting that a child had gone underwater and did not resurface. Casarez says both children appeared to struggle while swimming, but only one was able to reach safety.
“We do know that there were reports of the children having a bit of a struggle while they were swimming, and one of the children was able to get back to safety, and the other one was not,” he said.
According to witnesses, two children began struggling in the water. A bystander was able to rescue one child, but when they returned to help the second child, they could no longer locate him.
The Boerne Fire Department Water Rescue Team, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Boerne Police Department, Sister Dale Volunteer Fire Department, Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and Kendall County EMS responded to the scene and searched through the evening.
Casarez encourages anyone heading to the lake this holiday week to wear life jackets, keep flotation devices nearby and closely supervise children at all times.
The drowning remains under investigation.
