The Food and Drug Administration is urging consumers to check their cupboards due to possible salmonella contamination in certain Quaker Oats products, including some very popular cereals and snack bars.
Quaker’s chewy granola bars and granola cereals, like Quaker oatmeal squares, Cap’n Crunch cereals and cereal bars, instant oatmeal and Munchies snack mix are all under recall. That is in addition to the chewy bars, big chewy bars, Dipps and Mini Dipps variety packs, other granola snack bars, and granola cereals recalled last month.
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can be found in animal products, fruits and vegetables, flour, and processed foods like prepared entrees. Some symptoms of salmonella poisoning include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, according to the FDA. Those that are at a higher risk of contracting a serious or even fatal infection include children under the age of five, adults older than 65, and people with compromised or weakened immune systems.
Consumers should check their pantries for products and dispose of them or contact Quaker Consumer Relations (9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. CST, Mon.-Fri.) at 1-800-492-9322.
