KERRVILLE, Texas – Seniors Dyaln Mackey, Kamden Ross, Beau Cervantes, and Bradley Russell have been one of the most impactful classes in school history. Together, they have set school records for conference wins in a season, matched the all time win totals in school history, compiled strong showings in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference–including Schreiner’s second ever SCAC Championship and NCAA Tournament Berth–and most importantly, cultivated a winning culture.  There is not a single gym in the SCAC where these Mountaineers have not emerged victorious during their careers.  Players of all classes see the standard that the four seniors have set and their impact will be felt for years to come. Recently, Mackey, Cervantes, and Ross have all surpassed impressive individual milestones.

Dylan Mackey: The Spark Plug Guard Who Never Quit

Hailing from Houston, Dylan Mackey is the engine that revs the Mountaineers’ offense. Blessed with blazing speed, remarkable court vision, and a knack for breaking down defenders off the dribble, Mackey has become a nightmare matchup in the SCAC. Over his career, he’s claimed the mantle of Schreiner’s greatest playmaker. He currently holds four of the top seven single game assist performances in school history, including an eye popping 13 assists earlier this season. More impressively, he recently surpassed the career mark for assists in the NCAA era–now sitting at 359 hookups in his career. Mackey can also call his own number when necessary–he eclipsed 1,000 career points earlier this month– illustrating just how essential he’s been to the Mountaineer attack.

Yet Mackey’s story goes well beyond box scores. During the team’s magical 2022-2023 championship season, he endured a tough stretch of games including a stint where he was out of the rotation. He stuck with it and by the time the SCAC Tournament rolled around, Mackey was one of Schreiner’s most impactful players. Recognized as an all tournament performer, Mackey memorably began the SCAC Championship game with four made threes on championship Sunday and sank key buckets down the stretch to help clinch victory.

A notoriously low key member of the Mountaineer squad who leads by example, Mackey’s reaction to eclipsing the career assist mark was typically subdued: “Credit goes to the team for making shots.”

Beau Cervantes: The Vocal Leader and Record-Breaking Shooter

Off the court, Beau Cervantes comes across as just another bright Schreiner student with a pleasant disposition. On the court, he’s a relentless competitor armed with a booming voice that echoes through Stephens Family Arena. Cervantes arrived at Schreiner eager to make an immediate splash. He had to wait, though, as he found himself behind an established guard rotation. Cervantes attacked the early challenges, the lack of playing time and shooting woes, the only way he knows how – with indefatigable energy and unwavering perseverance. By his sophomore year, he entrenched himself in the starting lineup, and never let it go.  Over time, his three-point stroke transformed into a devastating weapon; he now stands as Schreiner’s all-time leader in made three-pointers. He has connected on 177 triples in his career, and still counting, completely smashing the previous mark of 135. In a nod to his work ethic, Cervantes improved his percentage from distance every season and currently sits 2nd in the conference in three-point percentage and 4th in three-point makes.

Cervantes’s leadership extends to mentoring younger guards in practice, working with the campus community, and maintaining top-tier grades. An outstanding student who was even recognized as a valedictorian in his class, Cervantes’s teammates have recognized how his positivity, work ethic, and dedication improve everyone around him. A future in the legal profession looks bright for the sharpshooter, who has proven he thrives amid challenges both on and off the basketball court.

Kamden Ross: The Double-Double Machine

In every conference, there’s a player that opposing teams have to game plan around. In the SCAC, that player has been Kamden Ross. The 6-foot-7 forward from Cibolo, Texas, has dominated the league year after year, putting up some of the best scoring and rebounding numbers in all of Division III. In his junior season, he was  recognized with SCAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors – a rare feat that speaks to his well-rounded excellence on both ends of the court. He was subsequently recognized as one of the very best players in the country, named to the NABC All American Second Team.

This year, the Cibolo native has terrorized SCAC defenses – and the national leaderboards – with his scoring and rebounding prowess. During his senior season, Ross is averaging over 22 points and 14 rebounds per game and shooting better than 60% from the field. He ranks first in the conference in scoring, second in field goal percentage, and second in rebounding. His field goal percentage and rebounding numbers are also good enough for top ten in the nation. His performances have garnered multiple SCAC Player of the Week honors already, with several weeks in the season still to go. He recently surpassed 1,500 career points and 1,100 career rebounds. These are mind bending numbers that place him at the top of the Mountaineer NCAA record books in both categories.

Ross’s accomplishments were arrived at through continuous improvement. Even after a first year campaign in which he captured the First Year Player of the Year award and First Team All SCAC honors, he went on to achieve new highs in field goals made, free throw percentage, rebounds, and assists in his sophomore and junior campaigns.

Elrakabawy said: “Kam has led through his competitiveness and as a connector because of his infectious personality. I’m going to enjoy every moment I have with him and these other seniors this season.”

Of course Ross, Mackey, Cervantes, and Russell’s stories have not yet reached their end. The Mountaineers currently sit at 14-5 for the season with a 7-3 record in conference play. This weekend the Mountaineers travel to Georgetown and Seguin for conference contests against Southwestern and Texas Lutheran Universities.
