Tax deadlines extended for Texans hit by July storms

Texans in 62 counties affected by severe storms and flooding in July now have until Feb. 1, 2027, to file many federal tax returns and make tax payments, Gov. Greg Abbott said.  The Internal Revenue Service granted the relief at Abbott’s request.  The governor issued a state disaster proclamation covering the counties on July 14, the day the storms began, and asked the IRS for tax relief on Oct. 15.

The relief covers individuals and businesses in the affected counties, which include Bexar, Kerr and Uvalde.  It postpones filing and payment deadlines falling on or after July 14 and before Feb. 1, including quarterly estimated tax payments and quarterly payroll and excise tax returns due July 31 and Nov. 2.

The extension also applies to people who had a valid extension to file their 2025 individual income tax returns.  However, payments on those returns were due April 15 and are not eligible for relief, the IRS said.  The IRS said it will automatically apply the relief to taxpayers with an address of record in the disaster area.  Taxpayers who live or work outside the area but were affected, such as those whose tax records are kept in the disaster area, can call the IRS at 866-562-5227 to request relief.

The tax relief comes as some flood survivors continue to struggle.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency denied individual assistance for survivors in Uvalde and Kerr counties, leaving some families without housing or money for repairs.  Some residents have been flooded twice in two years, and the governor’s office has said it is reviewing the appeal process.

The counties covered by the IRS relief are: Atascosa, Austin, Bandera, Bastrop, Bexar, Blanco, Brazoria, Brewster, Burnet, Caldwell, Colorado, Comal, Crockett, DeWitt, Dimmiit, Edwards, Fayette, Fort Bend, Frio, Galveston, Gillespie, Goliad, Gonzales, Grimes, Guadalupe, Harris, Hays, Jackson, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, Kinney, La Salle, Lavaca, Lee, Live Oak, Llano, Mason, Matagorda, Maverick, McMullen, Medina, Menard, Mitchell, Pecos, Real, Schleicher, Sutton, Terrell, Travis, Uvalde, Val Verde, Victoria, Waller, Washington, Webb, Wharton, Williamson, Wilson, Zapata and Zavala.
