TxDOT warns drivers about text message scam

Texas drivers are being warned about a surge in scam texts claiming drivers are evading tolls, targeting customers regarding outstanding and unpaid tolls on the driver’s account.  The message impersonating TxTag states to avoid late fees, the driver must pay within 12 hours.  Otherwise, the toll violations will be increased and reported to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

The toll operators want to remind customers that they will never send texts about unpaid toll violations.  If TxTag needs to text a customer, messages will be sent from a 22498 number, but they will never be about any unpaid bills.

Anyone who receives a text message should delete it or report it by phone to TxDOT or online to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.  Texas drivers who are unsure about the legitimacy of a text message can call customer service directly at 1-888-468-9824 or visit TxDOT’s website.
