The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has published updated requirements for vehicle registrations that will impact Kerr County residents immediately.  According to the Texas Transportation Code, Chapter 502.040, an applicant for initial vehicle registration or renewal of special registrations must present certain photo identification.

For the initial registrations and renewals of the following special registrations:

~Military service members serving out of state and domiciled in Texas

~International Registration Plan

~Non-resident Agricultural Permit

~Annual permits

~72-hour and 144-hour permits

~Temporary registration (One trip or 30-Day)

One of the following identification documents will be required:

~A driver’s license of state identification certificate issued by a state or territory of the United States;

~A United States or foreign passport; or

~A valid, unexpired license to carry a handgun issued by the Texas Dept. of Public Safety under Government Code, Chapter 411, Subchapter H.

For purposes of vehicle registration by Texas residents under Transportation Code 502.040, a foreign passport is an unexpired passport issued by the government of another country, accompanied by a current permanent resident card or unexpired immigrant visa issued by the United States Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS).

“I know this is a very sudden change for our customers.  However, as an agent for the Texas Dept. of Motor Vehicles, my office is required to immediately implement these procedures,” said Kerr County Tax-Assessor-Collector Bob Reeves.

Anyone renewing by mail is asked to send a copy of one of the acceptable forms of identification.

The Kerr County Tax Office handles vehicle registrations and renewals in Suite 124 of the Kerr County Courthouse, 700 Main Street in Kerrville, and at the West Kerr County Courthouse Annex, 510 College Street in Ingram.
