Winter weather and possible wintry precipitation are in the forecast this weekend, and there are things you need to do now before temperatures drop Friday afternoon.  All of these steps focus on the big four P’s (people, pipes, plants and pets).

To ensure your home and car are ready for freezing temperatures, take the following steps:

~Charge electronics.

~Check flashlight batteries.

~Stock up on firewood if you have a fireplace.

~Have at least two days of supplies of bottled water, dry and canned foods and medication stored in advance.

~Pack an emergency kit for your vehicle that includes: traction aids, shovel, flashlight, jumper cables, basic toolkit, tarp, rags, warning devices, first-aid kit, drinking water, snow brush, ice scraper, car charger for phone, winter windshield washer solvent and warm gloves, hats and blankets.

Do not do the following:

~Don’t leave the house if roads are icy unless necessary.

~Don’t use a gas stove for heat.

~Don’t use your gas powered car for warmth.

~Don’t use your grill to stay warm indoors.

~Don’t leave your garage door open.

~Don’t use hot water to melt frozen windows.  The window will likely shatter.

Pipes in Texas have a tendency to burst when temperatures drop below freezing.  This is because in Texas, many pipes are on the outside of homes or exposed to the elements.  Because of this risk, there are some unusual steps you need to take to ensure you’re not dealing with a flood once it warms up again.

~Leave your pipes dripping while temperatures are below freezing.

~Open cabinets under sinks to let warm air in.

~Detach hoses from outdoor spigots.

~Cover all outdoor spigots with an insulated cover.

~Know where your water shut off valve is located in case a pipe bursts.

~Do not use hot water or a hair dryer on the frozen pipe.  The sudden temperature change could cause the pipe to crack.

For your pets:

~Bring any pets you can indoors.

~Dress your dog with a jacket or sweater.

~Check under your car’s hood before starting the engine.

~Do not leave pets in cars.

~Limit outdoor time when able.

~Dry your pet’s paws after a walk and clean their paws of any de-icing chemicals that might be on the road.

~Recognize any signs of distress, like hypothermia. (lethargy, shivering, weakness, shallow breathing)

Trees and bushes can feel the weight of winter weather just as much as people.  To protect your plants and ensure you don’t have to replace them, here are some steps you can take:

~Water your plants before the freeze.  Water will actually help insulate the plants, trapping heat within.

~Add mulch or compost to provide added insulation.

~Cover any plants that will remain outside with blankets or tarps.

~Bring inside any plants that are potted.  Because they are more exposed to the elements, they face added risk.
