Gillespie County Judge Daniel Jones issued a disaster declaration Thursday morning following significant flooding across the Perdanales River Basin. More than 30 rescues were conducted Thursday morning, between 5-9 a.m. by emergency responders from Fredericksburg and other local agencies.
Gillespie County says the main area of impact was near Highway 16 South and Morris-Tivydale Road, around 10 miles south of Fredericksburg. Initial assessments show flood damage to roadways in several locations. Gillespie County says there are also areas of undermined pavement, deposited debris, standing water and possible washout. Several roads and low-water crossings remain closed because of these issues.
According to the county, State Highway 16 South remains closed as TxDOT performs repairs. There is a complete bridge washout on Old San Antonio Road, as well as washouts on Reeh Road and Reeh-Weinheimer. At this time, U.S. Highway 87 South is open.
Officials are warning residents that even if a road appears passable, damage may be hidden below the surface. Shoulders could be compromised, large sections of pavement missing and debris may obstruct travel lanes. Gillespie County residents should use extreme caution if they are on roadways.
