The Kerr Regional History Center will debut “Citizens at Last: The Woman Suffrage Movement in Texas,” beginning August 1. The exhibit is curated by the Woman’s Collection of Texas Woman’s University Library and produced by Humanities Texas.
This particular exhibit focuses on the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 which granted American women the right to vote as U.S. citizens. Texas played a crucial role by becoming the first state in the South to ratify the amendment. “Citizens at Last” takes today’s individuals through a compelling journey which includes the 27-year struggle for voting rights in Texas.
A documentary related to the suffrage movement will be continuously shown during the exhibition, along with historical photographs, cartoons, cards, and newspaper clippings. There will be a special presentation by the League of Women Voters Hill Country scheduled for Saturday, August 12, at 2 p.m.
The Kerr Regional History Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. For more information, visit www.kerrvilletx.gov, or call (830) 258-1274.
