Governor Greg Abbott is already activating state emergency response resources ahead of this weekend’s weather threat.  According to the National Weather Service, an arctic cold front is expected to bring dangerously cold temperatures and wind-chills to the state through the early part of next week.

The emergency activation includes the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), which will deploy equipment to pre-treat roads.  The Public Utility Commission will also monitor any power outages and coordinate with the state’s utility providers.

Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is expecting more demand with the incoming weather.  A spokesperson with the company says they will continue to monitor the situation and will deploy all available resources to manage the grid.

The Warm Hearts Warm Homes program is providing small space heaters at no cost to individuals 60 years and older and/or caregivers 55 years and older who do not have any other safe heat source in their residence.  “Supplies are limited, and heaters will be distributed on a first-come, first served basis to qualifying Kerr County individuals,” said Kerr County Veterans Service Officer Jenna Sanchez.

Those who are interested in receiving a free heater are encouraged to contact the Kerr County VSO as soon as possible to determine their eligibility.  Call 830-792-2203 or email veterans.service@veterans.kerrcountytx.gov.
