KPD and KCSO issue back-to-school safety reminders

The Kerrville Police Department has issued a friendly reminder regarding back-to-school driving and school buses.

Drivers on streets with a center left turn lane, such as Sidney Baker, must stop in both directions for school buses loading and unloading.  When you see the flashing lights, stop.  When there is an unpaved median or a physical barrier, drivers in the opposite direction can proceed with caution.

School zone speed limits (often 20 mph when lights are flashing) apply when posted.  The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office offers a few more quick reminders:

~Slow down near bus stops and be ready to stop when lights are flashing.  If you see a school bus with the stop lights deployed, you are required to stop no matter which side of the road you are driving on.

~Be sure to watch for kids walking or biking along the shoulder, especially in low light.

~Put your phone down.  It only takes a few seconds of distraction for a life-changing accident to have been prevented.

~Keep an eye out for crossing guards and always yield to them.
