A town hall meeting is planned for Wednesday, January 20, in Center Point to discuss possible plans to develop a subdivision of work force housing on land just north of downtown Center Point. The ‘Eden Farms’ proposal consists of 166 single-family residences and lots and 127 permanent RV lots nestled on nearly 150 acres just off Willow Bend Drive.
The latest proposal is intended to alleviate the area’s lack of workforce housing which was singled out in The City of Kerrville 2050 Comprehensive Plan. Kerr County Commissioner Tom Moser said, “There definitely is a need right now for affordable housing, and that’s only going to get bigger over time. This development will be in the ideal location, because a lot of economic development will be coming near there. There are hundreds of jobs, potentially, that will become available nearby, and Eden Farms will be poised to provide homes to those workers.”
Other incentives for the proposed site include a $63 million sewer system the county is putting in Center Point and that Center Point ISD is the lowest taxing entity in the county. The school has room to grow in its current facilities without burdening taxpayers.
In addition, Moser said, “It seems everybody wants some big financial break from the county these days. This developer does not have a big ‘ask.’ That’s another credit in their favor. They aren’t asking for anything, except our approval of their conceptual plan.” The owner and developer of Eden Farms is Brandon Namken.
The meeting will start at 6 p.m. in the Center Point school cafeteria. The Eden Farms’ team is expected to provide information on the project’s anticipated water consumption, and the contingencies it has put in the plan – such as xeriscaping and rainwater catchment devices – to make sure usage stays within acceptable levels.
Namken and his team will also explain the condominium-type format the housing development will assume, a format that will be the first of its kind in Kerr County, according to Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly.
