AAA predicts 9.4 million Texans will travel at least 50 miles before and after Christmas Day, which is a 1.7% increase compared to last year. Travel experts say the holiday rush runs from Saturday, Dec. 20, to Thursday, Jan. 1.
AAA reports gas prices are slightly lower this year compared to 2024. However, expect prices to fluctuate as we get closer to Christmas. Last holiday season, the national average was $3.04, with the Texas average being $2.63, AAA experts said.
According to AAA, the top roadside emergencies this time last year were dead car batteries, flat tires and engine problems. “Before you set out on that road trip, you want to make sure the vehicle is road trip ready,” AAA spokesperson Daniel Armbruster said.
If you come across stationary vehicles with flashing lights on the roads, Texas law requires drivers to move over or slow down. The law is designed to protect law enforcement, roadside workers, and first responders, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
Drivers are required to slow down to 20 mph below the speed limit or move over a lane when coming near law enforcement vehicles, tow and utility trucks, municipal waste trucks, emergency response, and activated TxDOT vehicles, according to TxDOT.
Saturday and Sunday before Christmas are expected to be two of the busiest travel days. Travelers should expect congested roadways and busy airports. Expect high traffic on December 26, as travelers head home post-Christmas, AAA says.
