The Austin Hill Country Chapter of the Ninety-Nines Inc., an international organization of women pilots, has announced its selection of the first annual “Spirit of the WASP Aviation Scholarship” recipient for 2025. The scholarship supports an aspiring female aviator pursuing aviation training, reinforcing the Ninety-Nines mission: advancement of aviation through education, scholarships and mutual support while honoring its unique history and sharing its passion for flight.
Grace Gillespie of College Station, was chosen for her motivation, passion and commitment to pursuing a career in aviation. She currently holds both Commercial Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor certificates. The $7,000 award will support her completion of the flight training required to become a professional pilot.
Gillespie is a graduate of Texas A&M University and works as a customer service representative in Astin Aviation in College Station. She is a member of the Ninety-Nines, Women in Aviation and an active volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol and TAMU Agrilife Extension Service Youth Equine program.
“Grace’s story of perseverance throughout her aviation journey has thus far honors the spirit of the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) for whom this scholarship is named,” said Sarah Wendt, Chapter Chairman of the Austin Hill Country Ninety-Nines. “We are thrilled to support Grace on her way to becoming a professional pilot.”
The Austin Hill Country Chapter’s “Spirit of the WASP Aviation Scholarship” honors the Women Air Force Service Pilots who courageously answered their nation’s call, proved their place in the skies and were nearly forgotten for their service during WWII. This scholarship recognizes their service and sacrifice, inspiring the next generation of female pilots to carry forward their legacy of excellence in aviation.
Scholarship programs are a cornerstone of the Ninety-Nines Inc., established in 1929 by famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart, to promote aviation education and career opportunities for women locally and around the world.
