The Quaker Oats Company announced that it’s recalling specific granola bars and granola cereals due to a potential Salmonella contamination. The products were sold throughout the all 50 states in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam, and Saipan.
According to Quaker, it has not received any confirmed reports of illness related to the products in this recall. However, company officials ask that consumers check their pantries for any of the products listed and dispose of them. Consumers can visit www.quakergranolarecall.com for additional information or product reimbursement.
The affected foods include the classic Chewy granola bar variety pack, the chocolate-covered Chewy Dipps bars, puffed and protein cereals, and even granola bars that are included in some Frito-Lays snack boxes, according to a list reported by the Food and Drug Administration. The potentially contaminated products have “best by” dates ranging until October 2024.
The FDA says, “To date, Quaker has received no confirmed reports of illness related to the products covered by this recall,” in its most recent news release.
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can be found in animal products, fruits, and vegetables, flour, and processed foods like prepared entrees, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC estimates more than 1 million cases of foodborne illness every year are caused by this bacteria. Most healthy people who are exposed to Salmonella experience a host of symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, according to the FDA. However, the CDC warns that children under the age of five, adults older than 65, and people with compromised or weakened immune systems are at higher risk of contracting a serious or even fatal infection.
