TxDOT announces ‘Saved by the Belt’ Challenge

The Texas Department of Transportation is calling on teens to make one simple choice that could save their lives: buckle up.  TxDOT has launched the “Saved by the Belt” challenge as part of its annual Click It or Ticket effort.  More than 1,500 high schools across the state are invited to participate, with students asked to pledge to wear a seat belt every seat, every ride.

Through Feb. 27, students can go to TexasFootball.com to take the pledge to buckle up every time they get in a vehicle.  The campaign comes as teens ages 15 to 20 were involved in 19% of all Texas crashes in 2024, despite making up less than 10% of the population.  State data shows 132 young people killed in crashes last year were not wearing seat belts.

Texas law requires all drivers and passengers to buckle up.  Violators can face fines of up to $200.  TxDOT officials say building safety driving habits now can help protect the next generation of Texas drivers.
